Eugène Delacroix (French, 1798-1863)

Femmes d’Alger dans leur appartement (Women of Algiers in their Apartments) is a painting by Eugne Delacroix. This painting was displayed at 1834 Salon in Paris and depicts four women in a decorated apartment room. Three of the women wear expensive clothing with gold jewelry. The fourth woman is an enslaved black woman looking back at the other women whilst she exits. Delacroix sought to portray a realistic portrayal of the social customs of the harem without a narrative. However, in modern times, it can be considered an example of Orientalism and the objectification of the East.

Prints include a suitably sized white border which enhances their look when placed in any standard off-the-shelf frame.
