This lavishly illustrated volume celebrates the extraordinary gift and promised gift of art to the Cleveland Museum of Art by Joseph P. and Nancy F. Keithley.

The Keithleys’ collection of more than 100 works of art selected over two decades to complement the museum’s collection is the most significant gift of art to the museum since the bequest of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. in 1958. The Keithleys’ gift and promised gift is particularly strong in Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and modern European and American paintings. Among the highlights are five paintings by Pierre Bonnard, four each by Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard, two each by Gustave Caillebotte and Joan Mitchell, and individual pictures of outstanding quality by Vilhelm Hammershøi, Henri Matisse, Camille Pissarro, and Andrew Wyeth. Among the Keithleys’ works on paper are six watercolors depicting the coast of Maine by John Marin, five drawings by Bonnard, and a spectacular pastel by Eugène Boudin. The Keithleys also collected Chinese ceramics, with particular strength in works from the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279) and the Ming dynasty (1268–1644), as well as contemporary Japanese ceramics made by the most accomplished artists working between the 1960s and the early 2000s. Cleveland Museum of Art Director William Griswold’s interview with the Keithleys will be followed by entries by eminent curators and art historians from the United States and Europe that shed new light on masterpieces in the Keithleys’ transformative gift and promised gift to the museum.
