Artemisia Gentileschi (Italian, 1593-1656)
This painting captures the biblical tale of Judith and Holofernes, which was a popular subject in Renaissance and Baroque art. In this scene, Judith is still holding the sword she used to behead Holofernes, and the maidservant bends down to collect his severed head. Gentileschi’s depiction employs a dramatic contrast of light source and shadow, which in combination with the intense subject is reminiscent of Caravaggio.
Prints include a suitably sized white border which enhances their look when placed in any standard off-the-shelf frame.
