Kawanabe Kyosai (Japanese, 1831-1889)
A reproduction of a lively painting from the CMA Japanese collection. The work by Kawanabe Kyosai conveys the cheerful atmosphere of a gathering and distinct character of each in attendance. The painting depicts shogakai, a gathering during which calligraphers and painters created artwork in response to their patrons' requests. Such calligraphy and painting parties were a popular topic to render in the early Meiji period.
