This is a reproduction of The Thinker, one of the most famous sculptures in history. Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) originally designed this figure to be part of an elaborate doorway for a decorative arts museum in Paris. Called The Gates of Hell, the portal's theme was based on Dante's epic poem The Divine Comedy. Intended to be part of a relief directly above the doors, the rugged bronze and marble figure was supposed to represent Dante (1265-1321) who appears to be pondering his great poem. Once Rodin separated the figure from the portal, he became The Poet-Thinker and finally just The Thinker. This iconic figure of intellectual activity is a beautiful addition to any desk or study.
