Jacques Louis David (1748 - 1825)

An ardent champion of the French Revolution and Napoleon I, David painted Cupid and Psyche while in political exile in Brussels following Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. Favoring sensuality over heroism, the humorous eroticism of this picture marks a significant departure from the earlier official, austere works. In the painting, we see Cupid sneaking off from his lover Psyche as she rests in a beautifully gilt and velvet draped bed. This poster reproduces David's wonderful image and allows you to bring the mythological romance into your own home.
