Renaissance Splendor: Catherine de’ Medici’s Valois Tapestries celebrates the completed conservation of six of the eight hangings, an extensive undertaking that has revealed once again the opulent materials and sophisticated techniques used in their creation. Detailed physical and technical analyses of the tapestries, complemented by new photography, provided the catalyst to explore afresh the enigmas of their design and commission—an intriguing record of Valois power-mongering against a backdrop of political uncertainty and civil unrest, linking the great European houses of the Valois and the Medici. New research into the history of the tapestries after their arrival in Florence in 1589 offers fascinating insight into the appreciation and display of these magnificent hangings.
